Amy Cunningham, MD

Adult Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon

Amy Cunningham MD  is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a local native. She graduated from New Trier High School and then received her B.S. in Psychology from James Madison University where she played Division I tennis on scholarship. Dr. Cunningham attended Rush Medical College where she earned her medical degree and then completed her residency in ophthalmology. She is a member of the medical school faculty at Northwestern University and actively participates in the teaching of medical school students as well as residents. She is affiliated with NorthShore University HealthSystem.

Dr. Cunningham has a special interest in LASIK refractive eye surgery. She practices small-incision cataract surgery and is proficient in placing premium intraocular lens implants including the Acrysof Toric to reduce astigmatism, and both the Restor and Crystalens to reduce the need for reading glasses after surgery. She manages many eye diseases including glaucoma and macular degeneration, and has recently introduced BOTOX into her practice, a method for reducing age-associated wrinkles. Additionally, she is knowledgeable in fitting patients with modern “bifocal” contact lenses. 

Dr. Cunningham is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. She is also an active member of the American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Chicago Ophthalmologic Society and the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 3 young children, playing tennis, and taking advantage of Chicago’s many fine restaurants and cultural activities.
